Welcome to Rancho Santa Fe

A Community Rooted in History

Rancho Santa Fe. originally called Rancho San Dieguito, was granted to Juan Maria Osuna, San Diego's first mayor, in the mid-1800s. After passing through generations, the land was sold in 1906 to a Santa Fe Railway subsidiary to cultivate eucalyptus trees for railroad ties. When that effort proved unsuccessful, the company shifted focus.

In the 1920s, the Santa Fe Company commissioned architect Lillian Rice to design a horse- focused, residential community. With the completion of the Lake Hodges Dam in 1917 bringing water to the area, development began in earnest in 1922. incorporating Rice's vision of relaxed, elegant country living.

In 1989. Rancho Santa Fe was designated a State Historical Landmark, honoring its legacy and architectural significance. Between World War 1 and World War 11. The Covenant flourished. Hollywood legend Bing Crosby became one of the area’s early high-profile residents, hosting annual clambakes at the prestigious Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club.
